More Insurance Choice for Disabled Drivers

Adrian Flux is one of the UK’s leading brokers for specialist vehicles, and the deal will open up a range of schemes for adapted vehicles and mobility scooters to Chartwell customers.

All policies are dealt with at Flux’s Norfolk headquarters, but the Chartwell name and its range of Freedom policies for disabled people remains.

The two companies were already bound by history, with Chartwell Insurance trading under the name of Adrian Flux from its beginning in 1965 until Mr Flux left to set up a new business in Norfolk in 1973.

But the business became available after Chartwell’s owner June Richardson chose to retire.

Gerry Bucke, general manager at Flux, said the purchase would add real benefit for the company’s new and existing disabled customers.

“Adrian Flux started out insuring kit cars and disabled drivers, so the company has a wealth of experience and expertise in the field,” he added.

“And because of the historical connections between the two companies, it seemed like a perfect fit. It’s a great opportunity for us to refocus our schemes that we can offer disabled drivers.”

Chartwell’s Freedom range of policies for people with disabilities includes motor insurance, cover for powerchairs, scooters and trikes, while there are additional benefits on home and travel insurance for disabled customers.

Cover for mobility scooters, including crucial third party liability, starts from just £42 per year, while adapted vehicle policies provide like-for-like cover for modifications, up to £1,500 cover for wheelchairs in the car and cover for carers to drive the vehicle.

The specially underwritten policies for home insurance include cover for adapted baths, stair lifts and other adaptations, plus mobility equipment such as manual wheelchairs (excluding motorised scooters and power wheelchairs), and equipment loaned from the NHS.
